The creative, courageous, radical and thoroughly excellent Southern Conference Educational Fund (SCEF) -- an old civil rights organization -- is once again attacked by Jim Eastland's U.S. Senate Internal Security Subcommittee (SISS). The completely racist Jackson Daily News (self-styled "Mississippi's Leading Newspaper") gives all of this a big, big play. The Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth of Birmingham was also National Secretary of Dr. Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
At the end of the summer of 1963, I joined the SCEF staff as Field Organizer. This led to widespread red-baiting and the Mississippi papers were full of it. I have always held firmly to the old IWW Wobbly adage, "It's better to be called Red than to be called Yellow." (In this context, of course, "Yellow" refers to cowardly.)
