In March 1998, the files of the old Mississippi secret police agency -- the State Sovereignty Commission -- were opened publicly. I eventually received copies of several hundred documents relating to me (and several regarding Eldri, and one involving then Baby Maria.) U.S. Senator Jim Eastland's 1964 letter -- involving an attack on me, SCEF, and Tougaloo -- made national news in 1998. Eastland was a notorious racist and a prime mover of the [White] Citizens Council movement . Ben Mandel, a former radical, was an infamous turn-coat who hired out to the House Un-American Activities Committee and then to the Senate Internal Security Sub-Committee.
